Search Engines

Google search screen

Google is an example of a search engine.

When you use a search engine, it searches within its own database of web pages for the keywords you enter, wherever they appear on a Web page.

Note that Google automatically inserts AND between terms to find Web sites with all the words you typed in your search.

Use search engines to:

  • search for specific terms or phrases
  • find well-known entities, like IBM, government agencies, or professional organizations
  • search a larger number of Web sites

Try more than one search engine - each has a different database of Web sites! Other search engines include: AlltheWeb, Ask.com, and AltaVista.
